Neighbours have described the horrendous chaos that engulfed when a brawl broke out near a Geelong Woolworths, leaving one woman in hospital.

Police were forced to use pepper spray to regain control over what one woman described as a “volatile situation”.

Witnesses said they heard young women screaming, and saw blood and washing their eyes

“It was scary,” one neighbour, who wished to remain anonymous said.

Police confirmed they rushed to the scene on Centennial Boulevard, Curlewis, near Woolworths at 8.20pm on Saturday.

A Curlewis woman, 21, was taken to hospital for observation with upper body pain.

A 30-year-old Curlewis man sustained minor injuries and was treated at the scene.

A midwife on her way to work said it was a “very volatile situation”.

“People (were) yelling, multiple people on the ground injured, and it looked like capsicum spray had been used,” she said.

The woman said the “large police incident” meant traffic was being redirected in the area.

“At least three ambulances were on scene too,” she said.

Another neighbour on the street, who did not wish to be named, said some of those involved in the brawl could be seen washing their eyes from the pepper spray in people’s front yards hoses.

“You couldn’t miss it,” the neighbour said.

“We’ve never had anything like it here before.”

“There were a lot of girls screaming and I wasn’t sure if they were okay.”
