Portarlington locals reveal why they vote for same party every year

Portarlington residents have correctly picked the government at every election since 2004, but so far neither party appears to have the overwhelming vote.

Albanese 'did the right thing' by apologising for unemployment rate blunder

Portarlington residents have correctly picked the government at every election since 2004 and so far neither Prime Minister Scott Morrison or opposition leader Anthony Albanese appear to have the overwhelming vote.

Of the 50 Corangamite electorate voters surveyed at Portarlington by the Geelong Advertiser, 20 said that “neither” the Coalition’s Mr Morrison or ALP’s Mr Albanese were their preferred prime minister.

Mr Albanese was the preferred Prime Minister of 13 of those surveyed, while Mr Morrison secured 17 votes.

Koni Philippou told the Geelong Advertiser she was undecided on to vote for.

“The way I vote … is I look at what I believe the general needs are in particular for my family. I don’t particularly go for one party or the other,” she said.

“And the thing is, even if a party has the things that I like for my family, each person is an individual. So the way they actually handle (an issue) isn’t necessarily what’s on paper.”

Deb Caruana said neither Mr Morrison or Mr Albanese was her preferred Prime Minister and said she had “lost all faith” in politicians.

“I used to really value that we had a vote, and that we had representation there, but I don’t feel represented in what the parties are giving,” she said.

Deb Caruana:

“I have lost all faith. I used to really value that we had a vote, and that we had representation there, but I don’t feel represented in what the parties are giving.

(Regarding the prime minister candidates:) “They’re not leaders. It’s about someone that stands up for Australian people.

“I tried very hard to watch (interviews) and hear what the leaders had to say, and I feel like they diverted everything. They diverted all the questions, they did not answer.

“You need to know your community … and they didn’t.”

Koni Philippou:

“There are black holes with everyone (when it comes to national security).

“The way I vote … is I look at what I believe the general needs are in particular for my family. I don’t particularly go for one party or the other.

“And the thing is, even if a party has the things that I like for my family, each person is an individual. So the way they actually handle (an issue) isn’t necessarily what’s on paper.”

Jennifer Peacock:

“I think we need to start again.

“There’s not really anyone out there who is completely heart, for me. It’s all about money. They don’t want to spend on things that really need to be (addressed).

“There’s some big things we’ve got to change and soon.

“We’ve got community boards and we talk to each other … and that’s where I see something get done … rather than trying to do it on a bigger scale of the whole of Australia.”

In regards to preferred Prime Minister:

“I don’t rate either of them.

“Albanese just hangs s--- on the current government. He just seems disingenuous when he does it.

“If he would talk about what they would do differently, that would be better than him just ripping (them) to shreds. But that’s politics unfortunately.

“Scott Morrison … I just think he’s fake, and I don’t think he’s got a lot of substance behind him.”
