A $12.5m redevelopment of Point Grey in Lorne has made significant progress following the completion of a key report outlining future design options for the region.

The upgrade, which is part of the $500m Geelong City Deal, aims to transform Geelong and the Great Ocean Road.

Lorne will receive new and improved facilities including a new aquatic and angling club, upgraded walking paths, space for casual hospitality offerings and recognition of cultural heritage as part of the proposal.

Cath Olive, Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority director of infrastructure and planning, said a recently released opportunities and constraints summary report detailed the complex set of requirements and diverse factors needed at Point Grey.

“We look forward to continuing to work with the community reference group, and other

stakeholders, to progress this exciting project,” she said.

The report will help inform the feasibility of future design options, which will be the focus of the next phase of the project.

It outlines significant opportunities, such as the potential to celebrate the site’s maritime past and increase accessible and equitable access to the coastal edge.

Head consultants, NMBW Architecture Studio, prepared the report in collaboration with Architecture Associates, GLAS Landscape Architecture and the Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority.

Practical issues around the safe and efficient movement of boat trailers, tourist bus drop-off and pick up points, structural integrity of the Fisherman’s Co-operative building, as well as appropriate carparking, bicycle use, and pedestrian accessibility will be factored into any revised design.

The draft UDF and Master Plan is anticipated to be released in early 2025.

Local residents interested in finding out more information will be able to ask questions at a drop in session on Wednesday, October 30.

The meeting will take place from 10am to 12pm at Stribling Reserve, 45 Otway Street, Lorne.
