A Colac man accused of threatening to murder a woman and burn down her house allegedly turned his rampant attack on a dog that came to her aid.

Jessy Bolton, who was residing in a caravan in Colac, pleaded not guilty to charges of assault and possessing firearms at the Geelong Magistrates Court.

Mr Bolton was accused of striking a woman to the left side of her head with a black and yellow bar as she approached his caravan.

He then allegedly pursued her out of the caravan and continued the attack, hitting her forearms as she attempted to protect herself.

Mr Bolton was accused of yelling that he wanted to “f--king kill” the woman and that he was going to “burn down her house and smash everything”.

Police also submitted that Mr Bolton allegedly said he “may as well kill the animals” too as a dog came to the woman’s aid.

When Mr Bolton attempted to hit the dog in the head with the same alleged weapon, a witness stopped him before he could make contact.

Mr Bolton’s defence lawyer submitted that it was an act of self defence after the woman arrived on the property and became “very aggressive”.

“[The victim] came to the property very aggressive and forced open the door, he was cornered and there was an incident that rolled out of the caravan,” the lawyer told the court, adding that Mr Bolton never used a bar to hit the victim.

When the victim attended the police station, she informed them that Mr Bolton kept firearms at her property and a search uncovered a double barrel shotgun, a gel blaster, a semiautomatic rifle and a box of assorted ammunition.

Mr Bolton’s defence lawyer said he denies the firearms belong to him and that he does not know who owns them, but “possibly a brother did”.

The police refuted this, claiming that the witness told them that the firearms were previously in Mr Bolton’s bedroom and his vehicle.

Magistrate Franz Holzer said the charges “should, and probably would, attract a jail sentence” and that a straight jail term was possible.

Mr Bolton, who has already served 213 days in custody, will appear before the Geelong Magistrates Court again on May 4.
