An elderly neighbour’s fence was also knocked over.

He said the driver of the ute had fled the scene.

Police are hunting the driver of a ute after it allegedly struck two cars before ploughing into a fence and fleeing the scene.

Hamlyn Heights resident Dean Peterson was inside his Chaucer St home about 11.30pm on Sunday when he was startled by a loud noise.

“My wife was getting ready for bed, I was at my computer and I heard an almighty crash,” Mr Peterson said.

“We went outside and we could see the debris all over the road and we could hear and see a ute driving off into the distance.

“It was making an awful, loud, squealing noise and heading down to Ballarat Rd.”

Mr Peterson said the couple’s two cars, parked on the 40km/h street outside their house, were damaged.

His wife’s Hyundai hatchback is “most likely totalled” after sustaining serious damage to the front.

Mr Peterson said the force of the impact pushed that car into his own vehicle, parked behind, which sustained minor damage to the front and bonnet.

The couple’s elderly neighbour’s picket fence was knocked over, with black skid marks visible on the footpath.

“We were worried about our neighbour – she’s an 82-year-old widow,” Mr Peterson said.

“We could see that the car had spun around and gone through her front fence.

“Her bedroom is there, but she didn’t hear a thing.”

Mr Peterson said the driver “took off” and police were searching for the vehicle.

He said their newspaper delivery driver had reported seeing a ute matching the description about 500m away and that had been reported to police.

Mr Peterson said it was lucky no one was injured in the incident.

“It’s crazy how much damage it has done,” he said.

“After it spun around, after it hit my wife’s car, if someone had been there they would have been killed.”

In a further blow, the crash meant the family could not attend the Anzac Dawn Service.

Victoria Police spokeswoman Leading Senior Constable Melissa Seach said Corio police were investigating the crash.

“Police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and are keen to speak to any witnesses,” she said.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
