Developers have unveiled plans to bulldoze a single home in the heart of Geelong and replace it with a cluster of four-storey townhouses.
A planning permit application lodged with the City of Greater Geelong revealed the bid to demolish the Latrobe Tce property, near the intersection of McKillop St, to allow the construction of the four “contemporary, yet conservative” townhouses.
Plans for the $2.5 million development - prepared on behalf of Mona Chung Chao - show each three-bedroom townhouse would be three storeys with a rooftop terrace on each.
A planning report submitted with the application argues the development would “contribute to the provision of more diverse, affordable and sustainable housing in this area of Newtown”.
“The design of the development has a contemporary, yet conservative aesthetic, is reflective of its time, responds to key forms found in the broader area and seeks to provide a response that will reflect the design of emerging developments within this transitionary area,” the report noted.
“The proposed development provides an opportunity to directly address policy demands for the provision of new housing which adds to diversity and choice, by providing well-designed and located dwellings within a Residential Growth Zone close to Geelong CBD and existing community services and transport connections.
“The proposal is respectful of the existing and emerging neighbourhood character of the area that is a designated ‘change’ area by virtue of its RGZ zoning.”
The public notification period for the development proposal will close on December 17.
