The owner of a popular waterfront hotel has relived a brutal assault during a brawl at his business, with police yet to track down the alleged assailants.
Patrons at the St Leonards Hotel were reportedly caught up in the wild brawl on Saturday evening following an alleged random and unprovoked assault.
Victoria Police confirmed the incident after being called to the iconic venue about 7.10pm.
The Geelong Advertiser understands glass objects were allegedly thrown during the incident, which saw the venue’s manager assaulted by another man as he served behind the bar.
A police spokesman said the altercation “escalated” and the staff member was admitted to hospital.
“A number of persons fled the scene prior to police arrival and the investigation remains ongoing,” he said.
“The victim, a St Leonards man aged in his 50s, was taken to hospital for assessment.”
The publican, who preferred not to be named until after the police investigation, said he had been left “bruised and battered” following the attack.
“I’m just a bit bruised and battered for an old fella,” he said.
“Fortunately this is a rare event.
“They were only in the premises for about 10 minutes before this occurred, unfortunately.”
The St Leonards Hotel is a popular seaside pub made famous by the hit TV series Sea Change.
It’s believed CCTV footage has been obtained by police as part of their investigation.
Police have called for anyone who witnessed the incident, or who can provide information, to contact Crime Stoppers.
