With 20 per cent of the votes each, two Geelong 11-year-olds have been named Geelong’s kid mullet kings.
Bell Post Hill’s Deon Seaton and St Leonards’ Beau Killen were equal first after more than 200 votes were cast in the best mullet competition.
Deon said he was happy to finish equal first because it meant he could prove to his mum that he didn’t have to cut it.
“I wanted to have this hairstyle because I hate going for a haircut and I liked looking at other people’s mullets growing and I thought ‘I’m going to see how long I can get mine’,” he said.
Deon said as he was growing it out his school jokingly told him he would have to cut it if it went below his shoulders or start wearing it in a hair tie.
He quickly went home and asked his mum to cut it, and did, however it was growing back to length again.
“I’m not quite sure why I love it so much, I just do and have for more than the two years that I have been growing it,” he said.
“Thank you to everyone who voted for me.”
Beau said he was surprised to finish equal first but was excited by the result.
At this stage he has no plans to cut his mullet off any time soon, expect small trims to keep it tidy.
Beau said he was the “coolest” of his mates as he was the only one with a mullet.
“It was Dad’s idea to grow it,” he said.
As a Melbourne Storm fan, Beau liked the look of Ryan Papenhuyzen’s hairdo and about three years ago his dad Matt said if Storm won this game Beau should cut his hair the same.
And he did.
Beau has tentative plans to head to Summernats next week where the first heat of 2025 for the Mulletfest competition will be held.
He was a joint winner in his age group in 2024.
