A TEENAGE girl has been taken to hospital after being bitten by a snake in suburban Darwin at the weekend.
According to St John Ambulance NT, the 16-year-old was bitten by the snake about 11pm on Friday.
While it is unknown what breed of snake she was bitten by, it was non-venomous.
The teenager was taken to Royal Darwin Hospital in a stable condition, and was discharged later that night.
A St John NT spokeswoman said it was the fifth snake bite incident the service had responded to in the past five weeks.
She said there were a few key things people could do to lower their chances of being bitten by a snake or to treat them if they occurred.
“If you’re with someone who is bitten by a snake, the most important thing is immobilisation – do not move them,” she said.

“Seek medical assistance or call triple-0 (000) immediately, and then bandage the site without washing or wiping it, so medical staff can take a sample of the venom if they need.
“Always take snake bite bandages when going out bush camping or hiking.”
