CCTV captures Darwin CBD eScooter rider face plant into footpath

eSCOOTERS won’t be as accessible for punters after a big night on Mitchell St, with no-parking zones implemented outside key night-life venues by Neuron Mobility.

The move is part of three new changes to improve rider safety.

Neuron Mobility regional manager Richard Hannah said the company was constantly looking for ways to improve eScooter’s and eBike’s safety and usability.

“We continue to work closely with the council and other important stakeholders to integrate into the city in the best way possible,” he said.

“This includes enhancing rider and pedestrian safety, and responding to the changing environment, with refinements to our riding area, slow zones, no-go zones and parking zones.”

As part of the most recent changes, Neuron has also brought the no-ride zone in Mitchell St forward to 7pm instead of 8pm every day and has introduced a slow-speed zone of 10km/per hour at the notorious Smith St and Knuckey St intersection.

Hospitality NT chief executive Alex Bruce said while businesses supported the eScooter trial, they had witnessed questionable behaviour and use on them. “It is part of how locals and tourists want to get around our city,” he said. “Our venues have witnessed and provided first aid to people coming off scooters and support greater rider awareness and compliance with the rules to improve overall public safety and amenity.”

George’s Tech Repairs owner George Fisher has CCTV cameras looking directly on to the dangerous kerb. “It’s one of those things, people are going to hurt themselves to some degree, but it should be an easy fix,” he said.

“On the other corner, there’s a ramp around the whole corner, but his corner has two smaller ramps (and the kerb).”

A Darwin council spokeswoman said council was still looking into an incident on Saturday night, where a woman face-planted on the Smith and Knuckey St intersection, becoming the latest subject of a viral eScooter video.
