Dozens of police have descended on the council lawns in the Red Centre capital to break up a fight – which involved sticks and other weapons – to make six arrests.

The fight erupted just after 2.30pm on the Alice Springs Town Council lawns on Todd St, and involved “a group of up to 25 people”, according to multiple reports police received.

“Some involved were allegedly armed with blunt and edged weapons,” an NT police spokesperson said.

“Two people were conveyed to Alice Springs Hospital for treatment for minor injuries.”

Videos shared on social media show nine police cars – with some stopped in the middle of Todd St – in attendance, with dozens of uniformed officers at the scene.

When this masthead visited the scene, one elderly man was being placed into the back of a paddy wagon, while most police had left.

Branches were strewn across the street — however, there was also a storm in Alice Springs Tuesday morning, making it difficult to determine if they came from the fight.

Police at the scene refused to provide details of what happened, and directed all queries to police management.

One witness – who didn’t want to be named – said they believed the fight stemmed from a “family feud”.

Another witness, who also didn’t want to be named, said they barely saw a fight, and questioned why there was such a heavy police response to an incident which they thought was rather minor.

“People were laughing at why there were so many police cars,” the second witness said.

This masthead understands charges are yet to be laid on those who were arrested in relation to the fight.

Police said investigations are ongoing and urge anyone with information to get in touch on 131 444.
