A small, beloved Darwin bakery is celebrating a big win after its sausage roll was declared the best in the Territory.
Last month, Ben’s Bakehouse, tucked away on Knuckey St in the Darwin CBD, was announced by Wotif as having the Territory’s best sausage rolls.
The accolade triggered a new wave of customers keen to check out the bakery’s winning rolls.
But it was through word-of-mouth that owner Susannah Vong learned her bakery had even won the award.
“I found out through customers, people just started coming in and congratulating us,” she told the NT News.
“It’s a great honour and a wonderful surprise – because a lot of hard work has gone into producing these sausage rolls.”
Loved and trusted by CBD workers and Darwin residents alike for their coffees, fresh sandwiches and rolls, Ben’s Bakehouse have been recognised for their hot food before.
Qantas in 2019 declared the Darwin bakery as having the best pie in Territory.
“Our cabinet is an award-winning cabinet in there,” Ms Vong said.
“We’re not just a normal Monday to Friday bakery either, it’s becoming very popular with tourists visiting Darwin – they have to pop over to Ben’s!”
As for the future, Ms Vong said her team would turn their attention to doing everything “bigger and better”.
“It is very popular, if you come to the shop during at the end of day it is virtually empty,” she said.
“We need to grow the shop.”
