Police believe alcohol was the motive behind break-ins and attempted break-ins in Darwin’s rural area and Palmerston early on Saturday morning.

Police say at about 1am an unknown number of offenders unlawfully entered a property in Adelaide River where they stole the keys to a vehicle.

A short while later it’s believed the same offenders broke into another Adelaide River property and stole two white Toyota HiLuxes.

Police say about 3.43am a report was made to police that up to seven people were attempting to smash their way into the Bell Bar at Bellamack using crowbars and hammers.

Police were called and the men fled the scene in one of the Toyota HiLux believed to have been stolen from Adelaide River.

The vehicle was later seen driving through Darwin’s northern suburbs.

At about 4.17am police received a report that the glass entry at Humpty Doo Tavern had been smashed.

They say a quantity of alcohol was removed from the premises.

Northern Watch Commander Greg Lamb said police believed the two Adelaide River break-ins were linked to the attacks on both licensed premises.

Police are urging anyone with information on the incidents to make contact on 131 444, or anonymously through Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Teens arrested after car, foot chase through ‘swampy’ wetlands

Two teens are in police custody after a car pursuit and foot chase through Top End wetlands overnight.

Northern Watch Commander Chris Humphries said police received reports of a stolen Toyota HiLux from the northern suburbs about 1.30am Sunday.

Officers then pursued the alleged offenders in a car chase before tyre spikes brought the stolen vehicle to a halt near the Pinelands BP on the Stuart Highway.

Commander Humphries said general duties police cordoned off an area of wetlands after the teens fled into the “swampy” area.

A dramatic foot chase with the help of the dog squad and drones saw officers capture the pair about 4.30am.

“No one got eaten, that I know of,” Commander Humphries said of the risk of crocodiles being in the area.

“It was very swampy, very damp.

“The dogs had to swim across some water at one point.”

The teenage boys, aged 14 and 16, were taken into custody.

Commander Humphries said the younger teen was also wanted in relation to an alleged robbery at the Stuart Park IGA on Thursday.

The pair was expected to be charged with a range of offences later on Sunday.
