A “big, strong” woman who bashed her partially paralysed mother, a stroke survivor, in her own home, leaving her in a pool of blood, has been given a second chance.
On September 4, 2024, Lisa Anne Bradshaw appeared by video link in Darwin Local Court to be sentenced after pleading guilty to attacking her mother.
Court documents state on August 14 this year, Bradshaw, 39, entered her mother’s Katherine unit drunk and caused a disturbance.
Bradshaw’s behaviour triggered an argument between her and her mother, who told Bradshaw to leave.
Bradshaw instead turned and attacked her mother, striking the older woman multiple times over the head with such force that she inflicted a bloody, three centimetre laceration to her forehead.
Bradshaw then left the unit.
Later that afternoon, her mother was found on the floor, covered in her own blood.
In Darwin Local Court, Bradshaw’s lawyer said their client was a “good candidate” for a suspended sentence, with Bradshaw hoping to travel to Kalkarindji to stay with family.
Judge Greg MacDonald said Bradshaw’s drunkenness was “no excuse” for attacking the vulnerable woman.
“Yes you were drunk, that’s no excuse at all,” he said.
“That might explain why you behaved so disrespectfully and badly, you cut her badly, she got a laceration to her forehead.”
Judge MacDonald told Bradshaw the bashing was made worse by the victim’s physical vulnerability.
“Also, your mum’s already unwell, she’s had a stroke, she can’t protect herself (and) you’re a big, strong woman,” he said.
“You should be looking after your mother, not belting her.”
Bradshaw was sentenced to five months jail from the offence date, suspended from September 9, 2024.
Bradshaw’s conditions include no alcohol for 12 months.
