AN UNSUSPECTING cruise passenger has captured a four metre saltie making a meal out of baby croc along the Mary River wetlands.
Darwin local Helen Staley was on a sunset cruise in Corroboree Billabong when the croc she had been filming leapt out of the water with a junior croc clenched firmly in its jaw.
The video shows the predator engaging in the well-documented ‘death roll’ to take out the prey, which appears to be about half the size of its master.
Ms Staley said despite this being her fourth or fifth cruise in the croc-infested wetlands, being able to witness the attack was “amazing”.
“I just love to see animals in the wild,” she said.
“‘I’m not scared of crocodiles though I’m not planning on getting in the water with them.
“To actually see crocodiles do what they do best and to witness a croc managing its own meal is a different experience altogether.”
Ms Staley said she had a strong interest in and appreciation of the Territory’s most famous prehistoric beast.
“I have a great respect for an animal that’s been around for so long,” she said.
“It’s from the dinosaur age - you can only respect them.”
She said she respected a croc’s ability to be patient and “wait for their food”.
