A MAN has been arrested after allegedly stabbing an inflatable clown outside a car yard on Mitchell St

A MAN has been arrested after allegedly stabbing an inflatable clown outside a car yard on Mitchell St.

The man is alleged to have repeatedly stabbed the clown outside Advanced Car Rentals about 10am Saturday before being apprehended by a manager.

Police arrived shortly after to arrest the man, who advised officers “he hated that clown” before being taken to the Darwin City Watch House where he was charged with one count each of Going Armed in Public and Damage to Property.

He has been bailed to appear before the Darwin Local Court on July 4, 2019.

The clown is one of 40 around Darwin sent forward by The Great Moscow Circus to spruik the show.

Circus master Mark Edgley said the circus wouldn’t press charges.

Mr Edgely said man-on-clown violence, which may or may not be coulrophobia related, was often levelled at the circus’s inflatable fleet.

In one particularly nasty evening in Perth last year, 11 Moscow Circus clowns were stabbed when a man went berserk at Hamilton Hill.

“It affects the local community, and the community often rallies behind us,” he said.

Moscow Circus clown Walison Muh said it was hard not to take the incident personally.

“Especially for me as the clown,” he said.

“It’s our publicity, it’s my publicity — these clowns are important.”

Muh, who hails from Brazil and has been clowning for five years, said the incident had only steeled his resolve to perform a great show.

“With all the things going on in the world today, the circus is a place for pure entertainment that is innocent and without violence,” he said.

“It doesn’t get us down, it makes us want to do better and better — that’s what the circus is about.”

The incident inverts a prior Territory clown/man misunderstanding (‘Clown stabs man in face, August 22, 2012) reported by the NT News where a rodeo clown stabbed a man in the face with a hunting knife in a fight outside a bullring.
