UPDATE: THE two men accused of brutally beating a man unconscious on Darwin’s nightclub strip have both been granted bail.

Judge Alan Woodcock said Liam Pollard, 20, was a suitable candidate for bail given his ongoing employment and family support and released him on a $500 surety.

But Mr Woodcock said he had “some concerns” about releasing Tony Allan Simpson, 22, who was bailed on a $2000 surety out of his own pocket and another $1000 undertaking from his mother.

Both men will return to court on October 23.

EARLIER: TWO men accused of brutally beating another man unconscious on Darwin’s nightclub strip were intervening after the victim slapped a woman, a court has heard.

Liam Pollard, 20, and Tony Allan Simpson, 22, both applied for bail in the Darwin Local Court on Monday following the alleged attack in the early hours of Saturday morning.

The court heard the injured man remained in Royal Darwin Hospital in a coma after suffering a multiple skull fractures and a broken jaw.

ONE of the Territory’s worst ever paedophiles was “king hit” and left with serious injuries in an unprovoked attack in Holtze prison.

Pollard’s lawyer, Eleanor Martin, said her client had “very strong ties” to the NT, had no prior offences and his employer would let him keep his job as a diesel mechanic if released on bail.

Simpson’s lawyer, Thomas Saunders, said his client did have a criminal record but the circumstances of Saturday’s incident were “quite unique”.

Prosecutor Laura Campbell said while the case against the two men was strong, the prosecution had “no position” on whether bail should be granted.

In ordering the men be assessed for bail, Judge Alan Woodcock said the offending was “another very brutal piece of late night violence causing serious injuries on the streets of Darwin”.

“We have two men kicking a limp body on the ground causing serious injuries,” he said

Pollard and Simpson will be assessed for their suitability for bail and return to court on Monday afternoon.
