A man who tried to rape a sleeping woman after getting caught “perving” on an off-duty cop during a burglary spree in Tennant Creek has been jailed for two-and-a-half years.
Darren Noonan, 19, pleaded guilty in the Supreme Court to a string of offences stemming from the series of break-ins last year.
The court heard Noonan stole $20 from a house in Hollis St on April 15 before going next door where he was caught peeping through the officer’s bedroom window.
When confronted by the policeman about what he was doing in his yard, Noonan replied “just perving” and was duly arrested and taken back to his mother’s house by other officers.

Later that night, Noonan again left his mother’s house and snuck into another residence where a young woman was asleep on the couch.
The woman woke up while Noonan was attempting to assault her and managed to fight him off and he ran away.
Still undeterred, the teenager made his way into a room at the Eldorado Motor Inn where he stole a wallet, cigarettes, food and car keys from a sleeping man before making off with his hire car.

From there Noonan drove to the Threeways Roadhouse where he snuck into a donga, waking its female occupant who told him to get out and again shooed him off as he tried to enter a second room.
He was eventually turned in the next morning by his aunty who saw him driving “a flash vehicle which she knew (he) did not own” and called police who arrested him just before midday.

In sentencing, Chief Justice Michael Grant said while Noonan had tested negative for alcohol, he had previously been diagnosed with “some form of psychosis or schizophrenic illness which was possibly drug-related”.
“The indiscriminate and chaotic nature of this present offending suggests some form of disordered thought or, at the very least, extremely poor impulse control,” he said.

Chief Justice Grant said a psychiatrist had found while Noonan’s behaviour on the night in question was “markedly impaired by a first episode psychosis”, he was “able to control (his) actions but failed to do so”.
“There is no evidence from which the psychiatrist could discern a personality disorder
or a psychiatric condition involving sexual deviancy — rather you become sexually
disinhibited when you experience symptoms of psychosis,” he said.
Noonan will be eligible for parole after serving 15 months.
