A trio of playgrounds are opening in Darwin’s north as part of a council vision to revitalise its outdoor scene.

The City of Darwin council confirmed playgrounds at Clarke Crescent, Rapid Creek; McMillans Green Belt, Anula; and Easther Park, Coconut Grove had been redeveloped to feature new equipment, rubber surfaces and artificial shade.

Lord Mayor Kon Vatskalis said the improved playgrounds were a way to encourage a “healthier” lifestyle.

“Investing in our playgrounds is one way we can support our community members to become more active and healthier,” he said.

“Play is essential for the development of all children and is critical for building physical, social, emotional and cognitive skills.”

Mr Vatskalis said he hoped communities across the northern suburbs would enjoy the new playgrounds together.

“Quality play spaces bring the community together and I look forward to seeing residents and visitors enjoying these new pieces of equipment,” he said.

“We engaged with the Darwin community to develop our Play Space Strategy, which guides the type of equipment and features we consider for the many play spaces across the city.”

With more than 150 play spaces across Darwin, including 121 playgrounds, Mr Vatskalis said the community needed better outdoor areas.

“The community told us they wanted quality over quantity as well as play spaces that have heat mitigation strategies and increased shade in place, and these upgraded playgrounds deliver that.”
