Fewer crashes and traffic jams will plague Palmerston as the Northern Territory government dishes out millions on road upgrades at two critical intersections.

Chief Minister and Drysdale MLA Eva Lawler said a new roundabout would break up traffic at the Emery Ave-Chung Wah Tce intersection.

The roundabout is hoped to improve motorists’ safety after 35 traffic incidents were recorded at the intersection since 2018.

Ms Lawler said the $5 million upgrade would be delivered by Territory Company BMD Construction.

She said congestion at the Lambrick Ave-Hutchinson Tce turn-off would be a thing of the past thanks to a dedicated right-hand-turn lane shortly after the traffic lights.

Ms Lawler said the $450,000 tender had been awarded to Allan King and Sons.

It comes as the Palmerston bus interchange upgrades near completion in January.

Ms Lawler said a $2 million contract for a roof extension and new facilities was being delivered by Norbuilt.

She said the upgrades would cater to increased commuters and new school bus routes.

Ms Lawler said the upgrades across all three projects had created 126 local jobs.

“Palmerston is the second largest and fastest growing city in the Northern Territory, and for good reason,” she said.

“We are investing in our community assets right across Palmerston, and the community members I represent have asked for these upgrades which I am delivering.

“We are also progressing a number of other projects across the city to increase transport capacity and safety, including planning the extension of Roystonea Ave from Owston to Elrundie, and improving the Stuart Hwy and Lambrick Ave intersection.”
