A THUG beat up his girlfriend while she was holding their baby before going on to stab her with scissors in a horrific case of domestic violence in Alice Springs.

The offender, who can’t be named to protect the identity of the victim, pleaded guilty to unlawfully causing serious harm to the victim who he left with a broken jaw.

In September 2019, the offender got drunk off half a litre of rum and arrived at the victim’s residence yelling at her and smashing up the house.

After having a brief fight with another man at the house, the offender turned on his partner and punched her while she was holding their infant.

The victim started to black out and was unable to keep hold of the baby before the victim’s mother stepped in and took the baby and went outside.

As the victim was on the floor, the offender kicked and punched her and stabbed her in the leg with scissors.

The victim tried to escape outside but the offender continued his rampage and punched her to the ground before dragging her around by her hair, ripping strands out.

When police arrived the offender lied about having a pair of scissors in his pocket before he was arrested.

Justice Dean Mildren said the victim suffered a fractured jaw and needed treatment at Royal Darwin Hospital.

“These are all matters of which you should be terribly ashamed,” he said.

“The offending in this case was obviously objectively serious and this type of offending is depressingly prevalent in Central Australia.

“It has a tremendously damaging effect on Aboriginal communities and families. It has a draining effect on medical and policing resources.”

The offender spent about a week in jail before he was granted bail.

In January he was caught breaching his bail conditions after he was found drunk in Alice Springs.

The offender spent six months and three days in jail before being given a suspended sentence under several conditions.
