Vigilance urged for residents of Central Australia, the Barkly as fire danger increases

THE fire danger rating is expected to remain high across Central Australia and the Barkly this week as conditions warm.
The rating for Alice Springs Fire Protection Zone, plus Simpson West and East, Tanami North and South, and Lasseter East have all reached High, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.
The Bureau of Meteorology expects the mercury to hit 40C in Alice Springs on Friday, with no chance of rain until the weekend.
Barkly North and South fire danger ratings will also rise to High on Friday.
A 41C maximum is forecast for Tennant Creek from Friday through to Saturday.

Fire and Rescue District Officer David Letheby has urged residents to be “fire aware” and listen to media advice and warnings on days of elevated fire danger.
He said his team expects a normal fire season across 2020/21 given fuel loads have been assessed as average.
“However, given the current rainfalls and being under La Nina climate conditions, we may see an increased risk towards September onwards, later in the year,” Mr Letheby said.
“Now is the time to clean gutters and ensure that overhanging tree branches are cut back.”

“For this fire season, it is important that landholders maintain a 4 metre clearance around their properties; this allows fire vehicles access and limits the spread of fire from one property to another.”
