NT Police have arrested three men after a targeted drug operation uncovered a staggering 7.7kg of cannabis and 280g of methamphetamine destined for Central Australia.
Early on Monday morning a vehicle was apprehended after crossing the South Australian border into the Territory.
A search of the vehicle uncovered the illicit substances, and the three men were charged with supplying a commercial quantity of both cannabis and methamphetamine.
A 39-year-old Alice Springs man and a 37-year-old man from South Australia have been remanded to appear in Alice Springs Local Court on October 21. A-24-year-old South Australian man has been remanded until September 2.
Police said detectives from Alice Springs Crime Investigation Branch and the Dog Operations Unit have been conducting proactive patrols of remote and urban roads.
All three men were also issued with infringement notices for allegedly contravening public health orders by bypassing the Border Control Point.
The passenger of another vehicle apprehended during the operation was issued with a drug infringement notice.
“The NT Police will continue to target and disrupt the supply of drugs to urban and remote locations. Drugs are not a victimless crime and Police will continue to work collaboratively with the community to minimise the harm caused by the supply of drugs,” said Detective Sergeant Michael Ordelman.
Covid-19 Incident Controller Acting Commander Sachin Sharma added that the group had placed the NT community at risk by disregarding health orders, in addition to the alleged serious criminal activities.
