RECORD-breaking hot July temperatures have given way to the return of almost-freezing temperatures in Alice Springs.

Alice Springs temperatures reached 31.8C over the weekend – the hottest July temperature in 80 years.

For the residents wondering where winter went, it’s returned this week.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) said a strong ridge of high pressure over Central Australia has caused a cooler change to move north through the Territory.

It will bring less humid conditions to the Top End for the second half of the week.

BOM has forecast partly cloudy conditions over the southern Lasseter and Simpson Districts for Thursday, along with morning frosts and light to moderate southeast winds in the region.

Morning frosts and fresh, gusty winds around Alice Springs will return on Friday, and cloud cover will clear.

Overnight temperatures will plummet to 2C for the next few days until the weekend, while daytime maximum temperatures are forecast at 18C.

Temperatures will warm a few degrees over the weekend before things continue to warm up next week, with Tuesday forecast to reach 27C.
