Parts of Central Australia on flood watch with highest rainfall in years forecast

ALICE Springs locals are eagerly awaiting to see if the Todd River will flow after the Bureau of Meteorology issued a flood watch for the MacDonnell Ranges and Simpson Desert for today.
“A cloud band extends across Central Australia and is expected to clear the Territory during Wednesday,” BOM stated in a weather warning.

“Most parts of (the) southern Northern Territory are very dry with very little rainfall received since March this year.”
Rainfall totals of 10-40mm are forecast for today, and another 10-20mm is predicted to fall tomorrow.
BOM warned that many roads in the flood watch area may be affected from today and become impassable.
Some communities and homesteads may become isolated.

BOM’s flood safety advice includes:
- Stay away from flooded drains, rivers, streams and waterways;
- Prepare for flooding and move away while safe to do so;
- Don’t drive into floodwaters.
