THE Adelaide to Alice Springs flight route will have competition for the first time in almost ten years, with Virgin Australia announcing they will operate three direct weekly services from March 2015.

Virgin Australia Chief Operating Officer Judith Crompton called the current Adelaide to Alice Springs route “effectively a monopoly.”

“Virgin Australia is delighted to bring choice and competition to these cities,” she said.

“Today’s announcement is another step forward in our strategy to become Australia’s favourite airline group as we continue to redefine domestic air travel in Australia for both business and leisure travellers.”

Chief Minister Adam Giles said the new flights, using Virgin’s 176-seat Boeing 737-800 aircraft, will provide a significant increase in passenger capacity.

“I am particularly thrilled that Virgin Australia has such confidence in the Centre they have upped the ante and will also open a new Regional Lounge for their new customers at Alice Springs Airport,” Mr Giles said.

Minister for Tourism Matt Conlan said the new route will attract more tourists.

South Australia Premier Jay Weatherill said the extra flights will make visiting Adelaide a more attractive addition to the itinerary for those who want to visit Central Australia.
