A MAN “hellbent on fighting” has been sentenced over a violent brawl which ended with a “cowardly punch” where a man was knocked to the ground – to which the perpetrator “gleefully celebrated”.
Kim Riley, 31, pleaded guilty to recklessly causing serious harm in Alice Springs Local Court after he punched a man in a street brawl between about eight people last year.

Judge Greg Borchers said the street brawl started as a dispute between Riley and another man and “severely expanded”. The court heard Riley was fighting with a man on the corner of Todd St and Gregory Terrace in the early hours of October 31 before the victim stepped in and tried to break it up.

Riley punched the victim in the chest, to which he punched back. The court heard CCTV footage showed four people attempted to restrain Riley prior to the assault.
Riley was sentenced to eight months jail, suspended after six weeks, with an operational period of 18 months.
