From Alice to Prague, the acclaimed first literary offering by Central Australian Tanya Heaslip has been insatiably devoured by countless readers across the globe since its release in 2019.
Clearly not one to rest on her laurels, the successful lawyer-turned-author is set to debut her latest novel, An Alice Girl, at a virtual launch this Monday, May 18.
Hosted by Bronwyn Druce of Red Kangaroo Books and Ted Egan, Monday’s event will be followed by a book signing on Tuesday, May 19 at the same location – albeit in person – from 10am to 1pm.
Born just north of Alice Springs at the height of the Cold War, Tanya’s parents were pioneers – developing a cattle station where water was scarce, power was dependent on generators and a trip to town for supplies usually meant a full day’s journey.
Experiencing a childhood unimaginable to many Australians, Tanya’s father was determined to teach his children how to survive in a severe and isolated environment, with his lessons often harsh.
Despite it all, Tanya tells of this precious time in the late 1960s and early 70s with raw honesty, humour and much kindness – making An Alice Girl a must-read for anyone keen for a window into a land and life often shrouded in mystery for both international visitors and interstate travellers alike.
“I hope there’s a sense in people who read the book of the magic and beauty of Central Australia, and that it makes them want to come and see it and explore it and learn about it for themselves,” Mrs Heaslip explained to the Centralian Advocate.
“That would be the greatest joy.
“But also I hope people come away with an interest in what life was like back then, particularly around distance and remote education, because School of the Air and correspondence school, writing and my books – they were the loves of my life.”
An Alice Girl by Tanya Heaslip is available for purchase from Tuesday.
