THE development of an accommodation and tourism connect hub in Central Australia is one step closer after a $20,000 grant boost.

The Menge Aboriginal Corporation will use the grant to support a concept plan for the development of a tourism connect hub and Aboriginal training facility in the heart of the West MacDonnell Ranges.

The proposed facility will include accommodation, art and education, training and environmental projects.

It is one of 14 tourism projects across the Territory which have been given a share in a $220,000 funding boost under round two of the Aboriginal Tourism Grant program.

Eight Aboriginal owned and operated tourism businesses in the Top End will receive more than $135,500 while six businesses in Central Australia will benefit from $92,900.

Grant funding will back key projects including business plans, infrastructure upgrades, bush camp facility improvements and training programs.

Saltwater Cultural Tours, based in Darwin, has been awarded a $19,500 grant to install two containers and decking for the development of cultural tours.

Minister Tourism and Hospitality Natasha Fyles said the “investment is supporting businesses in the Top End and Central Australia to enhance tourism experiences inspired by Aboriginal culture”.

“We know that visitors across Australia travel to the Northern Territory to immerse themselves in the rich cultural traditions of Aboriginal people,” she said.

“The Territory Labor Government’s strong health response means tourists can visit the Top End and Central Australia with confidence.”

The Aboriginal Tourism Grant Program offers grants up to $20,000 to expand the Territory’s Aboriginal tourism offerings and support businesses to improve existing experiences, develop new products or improve the sustainability of Aboriginal owned tourism businesses.

The grant program is a key component of the Aboriginal Tourism Strategy 2020-2030 released in 2019.
