Cairns Hospital has provided an update on the condition of a man whose legs were crushed by a reversing heavy vehicle in Portsmith.

On Monday the man was fighting for life after allegedly being struck by a truck at about 1pm.

The Cairns street was overwhelmed by emergency service vehicles after reports of a truck hitting a pedestrian.

At 1.50pm police, Queensland Fire Department and paramedics were called to Plath Cl in Portsmith in response to reports a man had been injured in a traffic incident.

Four fire trucks responded to the incident along with multiple police vehicles, an ambulance, and the Forensic Crash Unit.

It’s understood the man was allegedly run over by a blue-coloured truck and dog just behind the Cairns Regional Council complex on Spence St while the vehicle was reversing.

A Queensland Police Service spokeswoman said investigators were still trying to work out how the incident unfolded.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman said a man in his 40s was treated for significant leg injuries when paramedics arrived at the scene.

Paramedics later transported the man to Cairns Hospital in a life-threatening condition at 2.41pm.

On Wednesday Cairns Hospital refused to state the exact age of the injured man, however a spokeswoman said he was considered to be in a stable condition.
