Cairns’ grand old dame will be re-born with council approving an application to transform the former site of the city’s longest-running news service masthead into a world class $80m dining and shopping precinct featuring luxury accommodation.
Councillors voted in favour of a 13-storey tower to be built on Abbott Street – with only Divison Two’s Rob Pyne abstaining from the vote – featuring 75 units and retail outlets within the old Cairns Post building.
As part of the application submitted by developer Alex Sekler the Post’s heritage listed Roman columns and facade will remain with a landscaped courtyard to also be included.
“I am very pleased with the council’s approval and look forward to delivering this project for
the community,” Mr Sekler said.
“The Cairns Post residences will honor the building’s rich history while offering residents a unique blend of historical charm and contemporary amenities.
Former Division 5 councillor Richie Bates welcomed the development but urged council to do more to make the heart of Cairns more liveable for residents.
“Any residential component is good when it comes to activating the CBD,” Mr Bates said.
“That’s certainly what we need and will help revive and revitalise our city centre.
“It’s important that council complements increased CBD living with appropriate infrastructure and amenities such as parking and public transport services like shuttle buses that support residential living.”
Sustainability is a key focus of the project, with the development prioritising energy-
efficient features and green spaces to enhance its environmental sustainability, Mr Sekler said.
“We are committed to working closely with the community and heritage authorities
to ensure that this project respects and celebrates the past while looking towards the
future,” he said.
According to council, the colonnade Cairns Post building was erected in 1908 and extended to its present facade in 1924.
The building was home to a busy newsroom until 2022 when the newspaper’s editorial and advertising staff shifted to Grafton St.
The development application was submitted to Cairns Regional Council in September last year.
