The old Cairns Post building will be developed into a 46m tower containing 75 “luxurious apartments”, if a real estate mogul’s plans are approved.

Alex Seckler – owner of the 22-24 Abbott St property and adjacent properties at 26, 28-30 and 32-24 Abbott St – submitted the DA for the 12-storey apartment block, titled Cairns Post Residences, to Cairns Regional Council on September 14.

The building will be made up of: 15 one-bedroom 67sq m apartments, 14 two-bedroom 97sq m apartments, 30 two-bedroom 87sq m apartments, 16 three-bedroom 178sq m apartments and 131 parking spaces.

Each apartment would also contain its own balcony.

The building’s ground floor would comprise a mix of mezzanine and retail space.

“The genesis of the concept for this site is to enliven the city heart. Introducing contemporary residential product right in the city centre will attract a mix of short-term and long-term residents,” the application stated.

“(Residents) will have extraordinary opportunities to directly plug into the cultural neighbours within the Gallery precinct and the dining options and events held along the Esplanade.

“This has a flow-on effect to the local economy.

“The introduction of a suite of new residences are designated to attract buyers seeking a premium product.”

According to the council, the colonnade Cairns Post building was erected in 1908 and extended to its present facade in 1924.

The building was home to the Cairns Post until 2022 when the newspaper’s office was moved 400m to 111 Grafton St.

Mr Seckler has prioritised the preservation of the building’s 115-year-old heritage.

“The development will maintain the architectural integrity of the Cairns Post building while ensuring that its historical significance is celebrated and preserved for generations to come,” Mr Seckler said.

“The Cairns Post building holds a special place in the hearts of locals. Our vision is to honour its rich history while creating a modern, luxurious living space that Cairns can be proud of.

“We’re committed to working closely with the community and heritage authorities to ensure that this project respects and celebrates the past while looking toward the future.”

Mr Seckler said the apartments would be meticulously designed and offer a blend of historical charm and contemporary amenities.

The building will include shared facilities such as a pool, gym and reading lounges.

“Each unit will showcase high-end finishes, spacious layouts and stunning views of the surrounding cityscape,” he said.

“Cairns Post Residences will contribute to the local community by providing public spaces, including a landscaped courtyard and retail outlets that will complement the existing urban fabric.

“The project will prioritise sustainable building practices, incorporating energy-efficient features and green spaces to enhance the environmental sustainability of the development.”

Cairns Post’s general manager Stephanie Campbell praised the building’s new design.

“This is a testament to Alex Seckler’s vision to pay tribute to the significant history of the Cairns Post building by preserving heritage,” Ms Campbell said.

“The ‘Old Girl’ will enjoy a little makeover.”
