A teenage girl has died on Christmas Eve after a car crashed, pinning her to the ground in Far North Queensland’s top end.
Multiple emergency crews arrived on scene following reports of a single-vehicle crash, which had flipped onto its roof on Tuesday morning December 24.
Emergency services attended the accident just before 11:30am on the intersection of Kuttini Street and Piiramo Street in the remote town of Lockhart River.
A spokeswoman for Queensland Police Service said one person was trapped.
“Multiple crews have responded to a single-vehicle rollover, with one person reportedly entrapped,” she said.
Initial police investigations identified just after 11am, a silver Toyota Avalon was travelling down Piiramo Street, when it left “veered off the left side of the road”, rolled and stopped when it hit a tree.
It is understood that a female occupant was “pinned under a car” and was treated for life-threatening injuries.
That woman, the driver, a 17-year-old Lockhart River girl, died at the scene.
One passenger suffered non-life-threatening facial and body injuries.
Two other passengers were not injured.
Lockhart River Police, with the assistance from the specialist unit of Far North District Forensic Crash Unit, are investigating the circumstances of the crash and are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or may have relevant dashcam or CCTV footage, to come forward.
