A modern love story has gone from Tinder to Drag Bingo as the happy couple celebrates their engagement.
Andrew Wright took the stage during a Thursday night game of bingo at the Deck Bar to serenade now-fiancee Colleen Drew.
After a heartfelt rendition of Smashmouth’s ‘I’m a Believer’, Mr Wright popped the million-dollar question with the help of drag kings Donnie Piccolo and Vincenzo.
“We’ve been coming to some form of the drag bingo here and in Palmerston for three years,” Mr Wright said.
“I was wondering whether you would marry me?”
A crowd of bingo players cheered when Ms Drew gave her simple answer: “Yes.”
Ms Drew said she knew “something was up” when her partner started lip syncing.
“He’s not a public speaking sort of person, and I’m like, ‘something’s not right’,” she said.
“I was just like, ‘oh my god’.”
Mr Wright said he first met his love through Tinder three years ago during Covid.
“The first lockdown that the minister put us through pretty much ended up making me move in with Colleen,” he said.
Mr Wright said he had been thinking about proposing for three months, but planned the big night just two days prior.
He said he picked a song with lyrics he could relate to.
“I’d been through a fair bit before I met Colleen, my wife passed away due to ovarian cancer,” he said.
“The lyrics of the song resonated, not thinking I’m gonna find anyone, and then the chorus is, ‘then I saw her face, I’m a believer’, so I took that on board.”
