Leopold vs Geelong West

Leopold coach Garry Hocking described his side’s comeback 14-point victory over Geelong West as a “grinding win”.

The Giants led all day at West Oval in Scott Frangos’ 200th game and even jumped ahead by 12 points early in the fourth quarter thanks to an Angus Codd goal, before a surge saw Leopold steal back the lead and run away with a 9.15 (69) – 8.7 (55) win.

“That’s just a grinding win,” Hocking said.

After a scrappy first half, Geelong West went into the main break 16 points the better and with some heavy rain at halftime, it looked a long way back for Leopold.

Hocking said there were some clear things his side needed to do better in the second half.

“Gave them (Geelong West) a bit of a head start, they played some really good footy, they just outworked us a little bit through the middle part of the ground and they had better entries than us,” he said.

“In saying that, we had pretty good looks forward but it was just their defender’s being able to roll off quickly and intercept or create two v ones in the air that was frustrating us a little bit.

“We had our opportunities, I think at halftime it was only one scoring shot (the) difference … we knew we were in the game but we just had to tidy up a few things.”

The goals started to flow in comparison to the first half, Leopold adding three majors to the Giants’ two in the third quarter to go into the final change six points adrift.

A Rob Maibaum goal helped Leopold get within five points and following two Giants’ turnovers across halfback, the lead was suddenly with the Lions thanks to back-to-back goals.

Geelong West coach Greg Mellor said there was a feeling of disappointment in the rooms post-match.

“Disappointment, we put ourselves in a position to win the game and we weren’t quite able to close it out,” he said.

“Couple of little skill errors or decision making errors at crucial times, we gave up three defensive-50 stoppage goals which, if we’re going to be a really good side, we can’t afford to be giving those up.”

The loss was further soured for the Giants by Nicholas Wood suffering a concussion in a marking contest clash with Leopold’s Luke Justin in the first half.

“He’s got a couple of teeth missing, he’s suffering from concussion and gone to hospital,” Mellor said post-game.

Leopold’s Sam Hughes suffered a calf injury, Hocking calling it “ a niggle”.

South Barwon v Grovedale

A “complete four-quarter performance” has helped Grovedale to a big win against South Barwon, with the victory keeping the Tigers’ finals hopes alive.

Dangerous forward Mitch Chafer continued his dominant season in 2022 with five more goals to his name, helping Grovedale secure a 14.9 (93) to 5.10 (40) win against the Swans.

Tigers coach Daniel Fraser said the side had been building throughout the season.

“There’s always been 10 or 12 minutes in a game that lets us down, but I thought that was a complete four-quarter performance, it’s certainly our best win of the year so far,” he said.

“We set up behind the ball really well, I thought our midfield got on top as well, and our forward line was really dangerous.

“Everything we asked them to do as a coaching group they were able to implement, which is probably the most pleasing thing.”

South Barwon’s game was further soured after an ankle injury in the third quarter ruled key defender Rowan Gough out for the rest of the game.

South Barwon coach Dave Farrell said he was worried about Gough’s injury.

“Rowan was shunted off pretty quickly to go get scans on that ankle, that looked pretty serious but I haven’t heard word yet (on results),” he said.

“He’s had a super start to the season, he’s got plenty of footy ahead of him at a very high level so we won’t do anything that’ll compromise that.

“At the end of the day, it was a win that we needed to have so we’ve come away pretty flat.”

North Shore v Lara

A shoulder injury to North Shore star Mitch Langan soured a 10-point win against Lara in a scrappy contest.

Langan suffered a second subluxation to his shoulder for this season in the 14.7 (91) to 11.15 (81) win, with the club set to explore options for recovery.

The Seagulls had five players kick multiple goals, while nine Cats kicked goals as well.

Colac v St Joseph’s

Another dominant game from Colac star Jonathan Simpkin helped the Tigers to a 12.8 (80) to 6.7 (43) win against St Joseph’s.

Simpkin kicked two goals and collected plenty of the ball in the win, while forwards Luke Hillman and Jacob McGuane had three majors each.

Newtown & Chilwell v Bell Park

A strong wind made accurate kicking difficult for both sides, with the Eagles running out 10.19 (79) to 8.10 (58) winners against the Dragons.

After three goalless weeks, Dragons captain Jackson Bright slotted five goals against Newtown & Chilwell, while Eagle Darcy Troop slotted three for his side.

St Albans v St Mary’s

The top team in the competition easily handled the GFL’s only winless side, with St Mary’s kicking 19.18 (132) to 6.2 (38) against St Albans.

After kicking 0.6 in his return from a three-week ankle injury, Saint star Pat Dowling slotted four majors, while Ben Moloney made his comeback to the senior side in the win.
