New bar and restaurant in works for Alice Springs’ Todd Mall

A liquor licence application has been lodged for a new bar and restaurant in a popular shopping strip. Check out what is planned and who is behind the project.

A new bar and restaurant is in the works to replace vacant buildings in Alice Springs’ iconic Todd Mall.

According to a letter of support written by Alice Springs Town Council to Licensing NT in March, a liquor license application has been lodged for The Tropic of Capricorn bar and restaurant, to be located in Todd Mall.

The document said the proposal was for alfresco dining with lunch and dinner facilities in the heart of Todd Mall.

The application was lodged by Chris Wilkinson, who also owns the long established Page 27 cafe and Epilogue Lounge and Bar in Todd Mall.

Mr Wilkinson also runs Epilogue Lounge and Bar, also on Todd Mall, alongside Page 27.

After the closure of several Alice Springs venues in recent years, Epilogue Lounge and Rock Bar are the two main venues for weekend night-life in Alice Springs.

Mayor Matt Paterson, who wrote in support on behalf of the council, said Mr Wilkinson’s proposal showed consideration of the potential impact of increased activity in Todd Mall in the evening.

“He has demonstrated a deep commitment to responsibly running a safe and welcoming environment for the current and increasing clientele.

“This proposed development will also see him invest in local trades and facilities, with empty building space being converted to accommodate the new venture.

“It is pleasing to see development and growth among Alice Springs’ current challenges.

“The hope is that this additional culinary venue will encourage other private investment in our town and I wish The Tropic of Capricorn all the success with this venture.”
