A JUDGE has lambasted an Alice Springs man who was found guilty of choking his partner “over butter for his toast”.

Vivian Ryder has been found guilty of choking his partner along with aggravated assault and engaging in conduct that contravenes a domestic violence order.

Judge John McBride said Ryder’s reason for choking his partner was deeply disturbing.

“If he gets angry to this extent over a piece of butter for goodness sake, what do we expect if something seriously annoys him?” Judge McBride said.

The Alice Springs Local Court heard Ryder had started an argument with his partner sometime in the morning when he had made toast, but couldn’t find any butter.

A relative of the couple who happened to be in the house at the time, called the police due to the verbal altercation.

Before the police arrived, Ryder pushed his partner onto the bed and choked her, covering her mouth when she shouted.

Judge McBride said Ryder’s angered response to his partner was unacceptable.

“Your response was to be so disproportionate as to be incredible,” he said.

“Choking, applying hands around a person’s neck is a very serious matter and is a matter that you would do well to understand the courts take that very seriously.”

Judge McBride said he was concerned for the welfare of the victim and that Ryder had a serious problem with respecting women.

“He has got an issue with domestic violence,” he said.

Ryder pleaded not guilty to choking his partner but was found guilty by Judge McBridge on Tuesday.

Ryder had pleaded guilty to the other two charges.

He has previously been convicted for a police assault charge as well as three convictions of sexual intercourse with a child under 16, among other convictions.

Ryder will be sentenced on June 10.
