ANTI-SOCIAL BEHAVIOUR TARGETED IN OPERATION

NORTHERN Territory Police say a new operation targeting anti-social behaviour and alcohol-fuelled violence is having a “significant effect”.

Operation Nehammer was established last month after a significant spike in anti-social behaviour and violence in the CBD and suburbs, with police conducting weekly operations.

Areas targeted last week included Karama, Nightcliff, Casuarina and Palmerston CBD.

Key statistics from the week ending May 26 include 175lt of alcohol tipped out and 320 people ‘moved on’.

A further 38 people were taken into protective custody, including returning people home or taking people home, to a sobering up shelter and the watch house.

Acting Sergeant Theo Karamanidis said the Operation was working.

“The Operation has had a significant effect on anti-social behaviours and alcohol-fuelled violence around Darwin,” he said.

“Operation Nehammer will continue to run for the foreseeable future and NT Police will continue to combat alcohol-fuelled violence in all its forms.”

The operation combines police from Darwin, Casuarina and Palmerston, social order units and external agencies such as local councils, Larrakia Nation and public transport and housing safety.

Earlier this year, NT Police said an additional 2000 visitors were living in Darwin, partly because of concerns around Covid-19 in Aboriginal communities.

Police and councils have been contacted for further comment.
