A million-dollar netball court upgrade has been completed in the Red Centre – with one team set to take advantage of the new facilities almost immediately.

The Alice Springs Netball Courts at the Pat Gallagher Stadium has received a $2.3 million upgrade in what Alice Springs Town Council Mayor Matt Paterson calls a “huge win for Alice Springs”.

“As an active, sports-loving community, we are thrilled to see projects that enhance our health and wellbeing,” he said.

The project was made possible by $1m from the federal government, $1m from the town council, $250,000 from the Northern Territory government and $50,000 from the Alice Springs Netball Association.

On Wednesday, students will partake in an exhibition match at the ground, taking advantage of the new playing grounds, shade shelters, picnic tables, and more.

Up to 50 people will also be able to watch, with the project — which created 15 jobs during construction – including seating for up to 50 people.

Northern Territory sport minister Kate Worden said the upgrades would benefit people of all ages.

Federal infrastructure, transport, regional development and local government minister Catherine King said she was pleased to partner with the Territory government and town council to deliver the project.
