A woman has married a man who she had dumped — but he had no memory of the split.
Jenna and Mitchell Brotherson married in September 2020 despite having parted ways several months prior.
Mrs Brotherson broke up with her then-boyfriend because she was feeling “overwhelmed”. The pair had met in June the year before. Mrs Brotherson had been on a date with someone else at the time
She thought it would be an easy break up. However, Mr Brotherson began to question her. He asked why it wasn’t working out and why she felt she couldn’t give him the love he deserved. Mrs Brotherson, then 22, was impressed. But, she’d just ended things. To her, that was that even if there was some level of regret.
The following day, Mr Brotherson was skiing at Utah’s Beaver Mountain. He attempted a flip. However it was too icy. His feet ended up in front of him. He landed on his head. He ended up with a concussion and blacked out. He woke up to paramedics taking him down the hill.
“It was a pretty severe concussion. He ended up failing most of his courses that semester and had to take a leave of absence after that to help his brain heal,” Ms Brotherson told People.
In hospital, Mr Brotherson texted the woman he thought was his girlfriend. He couldn’t drive and needed a ride home. Mrs Brotherson was confused. She didn’t know why he was texting her when they’d broken up, especially as he was with friends.
“I was so mean guys, and I didn’t [pick him up],” Mrs Brotherson told her TikTok followers.
“He would message me throughout the week asking to hang out. I remember showing my friends he’d just texted again. I asked why he kept reaching out.”
She thought he was taking the line of staying friends seriously. One day, he asked to hang. Mrs Brotherson said she and her roommates had a tough day. He dropped by with ice cream.
A week later it was Spring Break. She was with her family. She was talking to her sister about Mr Brotherson. She said he was “so good” and “so sweet”. She missed him.
“My sister said ‘If you want to date him, date him’,” she remembered.
As soon as she got back, Mr Brotherson texted her. She took her opportunity to talk to him about it. She apologised for breaking up with him.
He had no idea what she was talking about. Mrs Brotherson then understood his concussion was a lot worse than she’d thought.
“I told him about how we were in my car and what I said to him and what he said back. He told me he didn’t remember any of that except for chatting in the car. But he didn’t remember what we chatted about. He thought it was super funny and I was relieved. It made it easy to get back together because to him, we never weren’t together,” she told People.
Mr Brotherson proposed in the place he first told Mrs Brotherson he loved her. They tied the knot the following month. During a speech, Mr Brotherson not remembering they’d broken up was brought up.
They are just glad everything worked out.
