A handful of McDonald's branches are facing massive backlash after imposing a new rule on their hungry diners. Or should I say, "hangry diners"?

Fast food outlets located in Melbourne's eastern and southern suburbs have made the decision to go cashless and people wanting to pay for their Big Macs with hard moolah are not happy about it.

Aussies are boycotting Maccas for a weird reason

A photo of a sign posted outside one of the restaurants has made its way to social media, where people are encouraging locals to boycott completely until the decision is reversed.

"For the ongoing safety of our staff and customers, we will no longer accept cash payments between midnight and 6am," the sign explains.

The sign provided no further explanation about why those times are tricky for staff managing cash, but a McDonald's spokesperson has since confirmed that the decision is in relation to recent incidents in the area.

And no cash means no one going in demanding that cash.

"The safety and wellbeing of our people and customers is our top priority," the rep said.

"In response to recent incidents, McDonald's restaurants in Melbourne's east and south have implemented a number of proactive safety measures to ensure the ongoing protection of our people and customers. This includes asking customers to use cashless payment methods where possible."

The rep went on to thank their loyal customers for understanding and confirmed that if cash was the only way of paying, they would not refuse a customer's order.

"We would like to thank our customers for their assistance and understanding as we continue to prioritise safety in our restaurants."

Customers are ... hangry!

Either way, die-hard Maccas fans weren't having any of it.

"Boycott this Maccas," one person urged online. "I don't come here that regularly but I have been for years and (have) only seen this today."

Other diners agreed that it was a massive inconvenience while another said they also saw the same sign at their local and questioned it.

"I instantly questioned them why. They say because they were robbed. Either way, I don't care, I'm paying cash regardless."
