VESTEY’S Reserve is the most popular option for a new Darwin dog park close to the CBD, according to the NT News online survey.

The Fannie Bay location received 36 per cent of the votes, ahead of Frog Hollow Reserve on 30 per cent and Gardens Park on 18 per cent.

Gardens Resident Natrisha Barnett said her Blue heeler Bella would love the chance to run around at a dog park at Vestey’s Reserve.

“Vestey’s reserve would make a great location for a dog park – it’s convenient for everyone in the city and is next to the beautiful Vestey’s beach so you can have a great view of the sunset while your four legged friend can have a play,” she said.

“It’s a good sized area and makes a lot more sense in terms of parking than some of the other options proposed.”

Ms Barnett said a lack of dog parks at the moment made it difficult to take Bella out to exercise safely when she some spare time.

“I rarely head out to the dog parks in Marlow Lagoon or Muirhead because it’s just that little bit too far,” she said.

“Bella loves exploring in the Botanic Gardens and going for the occasional dip at the beach, but I do worry about snakes and crocs – a dedicated, fenced area where she can play with other dogs near the CBD would be amazing.”

Vestey’s Reserve was chosen as one of five options by Darwin council based on its size, popularity, location and existing infrastructure and usage.

Ms Barnett said it wasn’t just parks that Darwin was lacking in, with a number of other needs for pets high on her wish list.

“I’d also like to see the City offer some dog socialisation classes for dogs that aren’t as friendly as others – Bella has a beautiful nature but we have met a few pups that are not as sweet and have heard of too many dog attacks,” she said.

“More emergency vet services are needed here too, to keep our beloved companions safe and healthy.”

Harriet Place Park and Wood Street Park each had seven per cent of the vote.

Darwin council’s official consultation will run until March 2. Submissions can be made here.
