A CELEBRATED academic and former head of CQUniversity is the preferred candidate to be the new Vice-Chancellor of Charles Darwin University (CDU).

The NT News can reveal Professor Scott Bowman is the preferred candidate after the interview panel had three strong applicants.

He is tipped to replace Professor Simon Maddocks who resigned late last year for family reasons.

The recommendation to appoint Prof Bowman will go to the CDU council for endorsement.

An all-staff email sent by interim Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Mike Wilson yesterday afternoon said “the appointment has not been to CDU council for ratifying”.

Prof Bowman retired from CQU in 2018 after starting a lauded career at the prestigious regional Queensland university in 2009.

He said at the time he and wife Anita, who also worked at CQU as the head of Department for Medical and Imaging Science, planned to reignite their love of travel and embark on a journey around the world.

“When we arrived at CQUniversity in 2009, I could never have imaged how much I would grow to love this organisation, its staff, students and communities,” he said in a statement published by CQU.

“It makes me so proud to see how many lives have been transformed during this time through the power of education and research, how we have expanded the university’s reach into communities that have deserved a tertiary education presence and how we have made CQUni a great place to work.”
