A new tropical themed outdoor cafe has been proposed for a quiet strip of Mitchell St.

But the it needs approval by the Development Consent Authority.

The cafe would be located at Mitchell St’s TCG Centre, opposite a proposed food truck park and next to the former Duck’s Nuts restaurant and the new Nine News headquarters.

“Not only does the development promote and facilitate an active street front but enthusiastically encourages the public to occupy the outdoor ground level of the building as if part of the street,” Troppo Architects Jo Best said through the application.

“The addition of a new (fully accessible) raised deck to define the coffee shop breaks up the continuous glass, concrete and tiled fabric of the entry.

“The addition of more organic materials such as timber, and the porosity of vertical surfaces will reduce the mirror effect of the tinted glass to the building skin by creating visual depth to the otherwise vacant entry atrium.”

Works on the cafe would cost developers $800,000 and would see a new pedestrian shelter extend across the footpath while also allowing for an open air cafe.

“Although not a requirement, the building owner sees the value in giving back to the street and seeks to make the otherwise ‘private’ entry atrium part of the street, inviting passers-by into the space to enjoy a shaded, comfortable retreat provided by the coffee shop,” Ms Best said.

“(The developer) is concerned with making a substantial and positive contribution to the public amenity and built fabric of Mitchell St.”

The application’s exhibition period was open from October 25 until November 8 and will go through the development consent authority in the coming weeks.
