A flight en route to Vietnam from Sydney has been forced to divert to Darwin after an apparent on-board injury.

VietJet Air departed Sydney at 11.25am and was about four and a half hours into its trip to Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City when it diverted to Darwin International Airport on Saturday afternoon.

It is understood a passenger on board the A333, which has capacity to carry about 300 people, had a finger injury that would not stop bleeding.

An ambulance was called to meet the aircraft in Darwin, with aviation fire fighters also understood to be involved in the incident.

The diversion two days out from Christmas comes at one of the busiest times for the aviation industry, with around 6000 passengers expected to move through the Darwin airport terminal this weekend.

More than 116,000 people passed through Sydney airport on Friday, with thousands more expected Saturday and Sunday.
