IT doesn’t get much more Australian than a crocodile versus giant snake showdown in the Territory wilderness.
Mother and daughter Territorians and wildlife photography enthusiasts Georgina and Jacinta Barbour captured these amazing photos when they came across a crocodile mid meal during a sunset cruise of Kakadu National Park’s Yellow Water Billabong about two weeks ago.
The crocodile’s snack? A massive file snake – which happened to still be alive.

“We came across the crocodile and someone yelled ‘the crocodile’s eating a snake’,” said Jacinta Barbour, who shared some of the photos on her Instagram page.
“We grabbed our cameras and we were quickly trying to take a photo, but we ended up being there for a quite a while – it took a long time for the crocodile to eat the snake.
“Surprisingly, the snake was still alive as well. We thought it was dead but then someone said ‘the snake’s still moving’ … and you could see that it was hissing and moving around. Then I felt a bit sorry for it.
“The snake would go down and come back up again … it really felt like it was crocodile versus snake. It was a pretty Australian thing to witness.”
Despite the animals’ epic struggle, she said the snake never stood a chance.
“I think it gave up in the end,” she said.
Ms Barbour said after watching the croc chow down on its prey for about 15 minutes, the group had moved on, and when they had returned to the same spot about 45 minutes later, both animals were gone.
She said she felt lucky to have witnessed such an awesome act of nature.
“I’ve seen a lot of crocodiles before in the wild but I’ve never seen a crocodile eating something before, especially a big snake,” she said.
