Horrifying footage has emerged of a young girl being hit by a car while riding her bicycle in Melbourne. 

The incident took place at 5:40pm Monday on Polly Parade in Tarneit, western Melbourne, when a primary school-aged girl was riding her bike along the footpath

Young girl hit by car in Melbourne’s west

CCTV footage showed the nine-year-old veering onto the road, where she collided with a white sedan. 

The girl immediately went flying upon impact, thrown from her bike across the car bonnet and onto the middle of the road.

Her bicycle was dragged underneath the vehicle in the collision.

Per the footage, it appears the 9yo was not wearing a helmet at the time of the incident.

Following the accident, the white sedan and a nearby ute immediately stopped their vehicles to assist the young girl - who was lying in the middle of the busy road - helping her back to her feet and making sure she was OK. 

In the footage, the girl could be seen trying to stand up after the collision, only to fall backwards onto the road; witnesses grabbed the girl and helped her stand back up before checking for her injuries.

Paramedics were called to Polly Parade in Melbourne’s west at 6pm, where they transported the young girl to the Royal Children’s Hospital. 

A spokesperson for Ambulance Victoria confirmed the 9yo suffered both upper and lower body injuries. She remains in hospital in a stable condition. 

Victoria Police were not initially called to the scene but have since launched an investigation into the incident. 

“It is alleged a cyclist and car were involved in a collision,” a statement from the police read. 

“As a result, a nine-year-old girl was taken to hospital with injuries. Police have spoken to the driver, and the investigation continues.”
