A young British mother has revealed people often give her odd looks when she reveals her toddler’s name to her.

Chesney Leigh Wright named her son Boye and is often forced to repeat her child’s name when strangers ask.

The 26-year-old said people, particularly older generations, “lose the plot” when they discover her son is called Boye, she told The Sun’s Fabulous.

“When they find out what I called him they tell me I am bonkers and crazy and that I should give him a real name.”

She joked she was being “trolled by pensioners” over the unique name, which is pronounced the same as boy.

“When he was born and we started using his name I loved it. It suits him perfectly and I legally registered it without complaints, even if people do call it ‘Britain’s maddest name’,” she said.

Boye was born in November 2019 after an eight-hour labour, and, in addition to his first name was given the middle name Lei.

Chesney said she and her ex-partner Joe wanted an “unusual and memorable” name for their son.

Many assumed that the child would be born a girl, but they jokingly called the unborn child boy.

Chesney said she grew to like the name and decided the couple would name their son “Boy” but would add an “e” to it.

“The nurses at the hospital were shocked, declaring they’d delivered lots of boy’s but never had one named Boye,” she says.

“You either love it or hate it.”

Chesney’s own mother begged her to reconsider the name at first, but it has since grown on the grandmother.

Now, Chesney is constantly asked if she has a daughter next if she will follow the naming trend – or if the name was given on a dare.

Her eldest child’s name is Eriella Leigh, which is a combination between Ariel and Elijah.

She kept the traditional spelling of Eriella’s middle name so it was in line with Chesney’s own, whereas Boye was given his version in tribute.
