Mum's $8 Kmart hack to organise your home's 'dumping ground'

You know that pile of junk on your bench that just keeps growing and growing... well, this is your sign to do something about it.

Mum shares hack to create a 'dumping ground' in your house

We all have one.

A fake Instagram account to stalk our high-school boyfriends and our ex-best friends.

Kidding, that's not what we're here to talk about today (and maybe you're normal and don't even have one).

But something you definitely do have, is a big old pile of junk accumulating on your kitchen counter.

Or maybe it's on a bench by your door, or inside a cupboard - whatever, we know it's somewhere. And we know you throw all your random bits and pieces into that spot, from keys to mail, lip balms and batteries. If it's random and doesn't have a designated home, it'll go there.

But not anymore!

A mum has come up with a great way to actually organise all that crap, and it doesn't involve any fancy system or gadget. Rather, you just have to relocate everything to a more 'official' spot, where it will be neatly contained in a basket and emptied every couple of days.

That's it! That's the hack

And while it sounds simple — you just move the stuff from one place to another —  that's exactly why it works!

Perfect for the overwhelmed mamas and lazy gals among us. 🙋‍♀️

The 'dumping ground' storage hack

Taking to TikTok, the mum, Ange McKenzie, shared the trick, saying it's been an "absolute dumping ground life saver" for her.

"I have this one specific spot on my bench which just attracts all the junk. Paperwork, toys, whatever. It is always there and sometimes I just don't have the time to put them all back in their spot," the WA cleaner and home organiser told her followers.

"So I put all the bits and pieces in the container and I'll generally empty it out when it's full or within a couple of days, but this just makes it so easy."

The storage container is the $8 Magnetic Basket, found in the laundry section of Kmart.

Ange says it works perfectly for the hack because it has a magnetic strip on the back so it can be hidden away on the side of your fridge.

Plus, it's 32 centimetres wide and can hold up to three kilos, making it the perfect size for all of your things.

"I love this idea"

Commenters praised the mum's easy solution, with many saying they're going to give it a go themselves.

"Ooh I'm going to get one for each kid so they can then take them back to their room to put away," said one.

Another added, "Wow thanks for sharing, I love this idea," another fan shared.

And this person replied, "Literally flicked over to the Kmart app and ordered!! Onepass free delivery. Yes please!"

"I put all my kids' drink bottles in there so they're not scattered around the house," a fellow mum revealed.

Then a different woman said she has multiple around her house for different purposes: "I bought three of these, and they work very well. I Just LOVE them! I have two on the outside of my laundry sink and a third on the side of my fridge with 10 rolled-up tea towels."
