A NEW milkwood tree has been planted in the Cavenagh St car park, in place of the century-old milkwood which was cut down late last year.
Independent MLA Gerry Wood replanted the healthy tree with hoped it would be safe from developers and council, after the old milkwood was cut down due to heartrot, clearing the way for a Charles Darwin University city campus.

“It’s not in the road and was needed to replace the so called sick tree,” he said.
“Therefore there is no reason to destroy this new healthy tree.”
Along with the sapling is a sign Mr Wood has erected, which claims the months-old tree is being assessed by the heritage council and was protected under parliamentary privilege.
“‘Protected tree’ is just a nice way of saying ‘don’t touch this tree, it’s not doing any harm to anyone or the university’s and the mayor’s grand plans’.”

The tree was cut down despite protesters leaving the site just 24 hours earlier with assurances it was safe.
